”Merah Putih Village Cooperative: Empowering Rural Communities Economically”

by

President Prabowo Subianto’s initiative to strengthen rural economies and improve the welfare of communities in villages across Indonesia is reflected in the establishment of the Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan (Village/Urban Village Cooperative) Merah Putih. This cooperative marks a significant milestone in village-based national development, allowing communities to manage their resources independently. The program, launched on Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day, aims to provide economic independence to rural villages, transitioning them from reliance on social assistance to sustainable economic empowerment.

Despite Indonesia’s progress, many villages and urban neighborhoods still face challenges in meeting basic needs and driving local economies. Issues such as improper storage of fish catch, debt among micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), lack of healthcare facilities, and absence of cooperative services continue to hinder community development. To address these issues, President Prabowo launched over 80,000 Kopdes Merah Putih cooperatives with the goal of establishing a self-reliant, inclusive, and equitable economy.

This initiative aligns with the third pillar of Asta Cita, highlighting cooperatives as the key driver of rural economic growth. By creating jobs, promoting entrepreneurship, and supporting local production, the program aims to shorten distribution chains and ensure essential goods reach people at fair prices. For Dedi Nurendi, head of a cooperative in Bandung regency, the program has already had a positive impact by providing residents with access to basic necessities and financial services, reducing dependence on informal lenders.

In conclusion, the Kopdes Merah Putih initiative embodies a collaborative approach to addressing economic challenges in rural communities. By fostering a spirit of mutual cooperation and independence, these cooperatives play a vital role in empowering villages across Indonesia.
